Djokovic Mounts Impressive Comeback Against De Minaur at Wimbledon 2025
London: Novak Djokovic demonstrated resilience and skill, overcoming a slow start to defeat Alex de Minaur in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2025. After a shaky first set, the Serbian champion rallied to secure a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory, advancing to his 16th quarterfinal at the prestigious tournament.
The match, lasting three hours and 18 minutes, saw Djokovic initially struggle against the 11th-seeded Australian. However, the veteran player found his rhythm, particularly dominating the fourth set by winning five consecutive games.
The day at SW19 began with challenging weather conditions. Despite a packed Centre Court and the presence of eight-time champion Roger Federer, De Minaur initially seized the advantage. He capitalized on the windy conditions.
De Minaur's previous Wimbledon journey was cut short last year due to a hip injury, granting Djokovic a walkover into the semifinals. This year, the Australian showcased his determination. But Djokovic shifted gears, dictating play with his forehand and pushing De Minaur onto the defensive.
The second set featured early exchanges of breaks, with De Minaur winning a grueling second game that included nine deuces. Djokovic regained control, holding serve and establishing a 3-1 lead. Supported by his fiancee Katie Boulter, De Minaur faltered in the third set, allowing Djokovic to seize a two-sets-to-one advantage.
In the fourth set, De Minaur surged to a 4-1 lead, raising the possibility of a five-set thriller. However, Djokovic had other plans. He broke back in the seventh game, leveled the score at 4-4, and ultimately closed out the match.
Dismissing concerns about stomach issues, Djokovic joked about the advantages of a serve-and-volley style, acknowledging Federer's presence in the stands. He added, "It’s probably the first time he has watched me and I’ve won the match. The last couple I lost, it’s good to break the curse.”
In another fourth-round match, Italian player Flavio Cobolli secured his first Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance by defeating Marin Cilic. Cobolli is now set to face his idol, Djokovic, in the next round.
Belinda Bencic also advanced to the quarterfinals, marking her best result at Wimbledon.
