Diogo Jota Crash: Speeding a Possible Factor, Spanish Police Investigate

Tuesday - 08/07/2025 15:20
Spanish police believe Liverpool player Diogo Jota was driving over the speed limit when he and his brother died in a car crash last week.

Spanish authorities are investigating whether speeding was a factor in the tragic car accident that claimed the lives of Liverpool player Diogo Jota and his brother last week.

The Civil Guard in Spain announced on Tuesday that the ongoing investigation into the crash, which occurred last Thursday, suggests that Jota may have been driving above the speed limit. Preliminary findings indicate that the Lamborghini veered off course following a tire blowout, potentially exacerbated by excessive speed.

Previously, authorities had not confirmed whether Jota or his brother, André Silva, was behind the wheel. However, they have now indicated that Diogo Jota was driving at the time of the accident.

The siblings perished when the vehicle caught fire on a remote stretch of highway in the early hours of the morning. The speed limit on that section of the dual carriageway is 120km/h (74.5mph).

According to Portuguese media reports, Jota, 28, was en route to Santander in northern Spain to catch a ferry to England. He had reportedly been advised against flying after undergoing a recent lung procedure, aiming to rejoin Liverpool.

The brothers were laid to rest last Saturday in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal.

A well-attended wake and funeral brought together dignitaries, family members, friends, and current and former teammates. Silva played for Portuguese lower division side Penafiel.

The football world continues to mourn the loss of Diogo Jota and his brother, with tributes pouring in from around the globe. Thousands of fans have gathered at Anfield stadium to express their condolences to the Liverpool forward.

Floral tributes were also placed at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday, as Liverpool resumed preseason training after postponing their initial start date due to Jota's death.

The Premier League champions are scheduled to play their first summer game against Preston North End on July 13, though the status of the match remains uncertain.
