The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle has commenced with a flurry of activity, as three Test series have already begun to shape the tournament standings. While Australia and England have emerged as early frontrunners, India and the West Indies are looking to gain ground.
Australia and England currently hold the top two positions in the WTC table, each boasting a perfect 100% points percentage after securing victories in their opening matches. Sri Lanka are in third place after concluding their two-match series against Bangladesh with one win and one draw. Bangladesh, with one draw and one loss, are in fourth place.
South Africa, New Zealand, and Pakistan are yet to commence their WTC campaigns this cycle.
India's opening match did not proceed as anticipated, despite a strong showing at Headingley. The team had five centurions in the match but still suffered a defeat as England successfully chased their target, securing a 1-0 lead in the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
England achieved their target of 371, thanks to an impressive opening partnership between Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley, while Joe Root and debutant Jamie Smith guided the chase to victory with an unbroken partnership. India was left to lament a middle-order collapse and missed opportunities.
Following the match, Shubman Gill acknowledged that India had opportunities but failed to capitalize on them. He noted that India had hoped for a more substantial lead, but a lack of runs from the lower order hindered their plans.
India will now focus on the second Test at Edgbaston, hoping to recover swiftly and maintain their chances in the WTC campaign. Currently, they are positioned near the bottom of the table, along with the West Indies.
The WTC cycle began with Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh on June 17 and will continue until the final in 2027.
