Djokovic, 38, is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title in New York, but he knows the road will be far from easy. After a straight-sets loss to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon semifinals, Djokovic skipped the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters to conserve energy. His brief return came in the revamped mixed doubles in New York, though he and Olga Danilovic bowed out in the first round.Despite setbacks, the four-time US Open champion remains resolute. “I still feel like I continue to play my best tennis at Grand Slams,” he said after Wimbledon.
“Those are the tournaments that I care about at this stage of my career the most.”Djokovic admitted age and fitness have become factors. “It’s just age, the wear and tear of the body. But when I’m fresh, I can still play really good tennis. I’ve proven that this year,” he said.As Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner dominate the new era, Djokovic’s gamble to recharge rather than grind through the summer will be tested in New York. With Lacoste’s symbolic GOAT tribute, Djokovic enters the US Open not just as a competitor, but as an enduring icon of the sport.
