There have been plenty of stories of fame passing through Bollywood, but none are sadder than actress Vimi's. Her story shows how quickly glamour can turn to desolation, hope into seclusion, and applause into silence. Vimi's entrance into films was nothing short of spectacular. She starred in B.R. Chopra's 'Hamraaz' (1967)—a picture that transformed her from a relative unknown to an overnight star, as 'Hamraaz' became an instant hit at the box office.

Overnight success and stardom

With her stunning beauty and engaging screen presence, Vimi found a home in the industry quickly. Before long, she was starring beside the leading men of the time, such as Sunil Dutt, Shashi Kapoor, and Raaj Kumar in 'Vachan' and 'Aabroo.' By the late 1960s, she was at the peak of her fame, reportedly earning as much as ₹3 lakh for each film—an unbelievable number.

Turmoil behind the glamour

As per an old report in News18, beneath the glamour, Vimi's personal life was in turmoil. She was already married to industrialist Shiv Agarwal and a mother of two when she came into the industry. The pressure of stardom put strain on her marriage, which eventually led to separation. In search of comfort, she got involved with a no-name producer, Jolly. This relationship did not provide stability. Rather, it led her into the darkness of Jolly's manipulation and encouraged Vimi into prostitution, which destroyed her emotionally.

A fall into despair

Both personally and professionally devastated, Vimi turned to alcohol. She attempted to put her life back together. She even tried a small business stint in Kolkata, which ended in complete financial disaster. Within ten years of her glorious beginnings, her career went straight to ruin. The once adored star was isolated with addiction.

A lonely end

By the time she reached her mid-thirties, Vimi's health had plummeted because of her alcoholism. She was hospitalized with liver problems but did not get better. The actress passed away in 1977, when she was just 34 years old. Once again, this happened with little to no recognition from the industry that once adored her or the media that at one time worshiped her. Vimi's financial situation was so dire that her dead body had to be transported to the cremation ghat on a handcart, a lasting image of her fall from grace. In Bollywood, Vimi's story will remain forever as one of the saddest cautionary tales—a once-brief rise and now a painful fall, a reminder about how fame can just as quickly disappear in our material world.
