Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer has shed light on his decision to take a break from red-ball cricket, emphasizing the critical role of workload management in maintaining peak performance across all formats.
Following India’s narrow defeat to Australia in the second ODI in Adelaide, Iyer addressed his approach to balancing workload and making technical adjustments to ensure consistency and confidence.
Earlier this month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approved Iyer’s request for a six-month hiatus from red-ball cricket due to concerns about his back.
"When I field for long hours in red-ball cricket, I've realised my intensity tends to drop," Iyer stated. "At the international level, that can make a difference. In ODIs, you have rest days and time to recover, so it's easier to manage. Based on that, I've planned my approach."
Iyer also discussed his recent shift to a more upright batting stance, which he believes has improved his adaptability on various surfaces. He explained that this adjustment is not sudden, as he has been working on it with his coach since last year, particularly for wickets with higher bounce.
Highlighting the importance of adapting to different conditions, Iyer noted, "You have to keep chopping and changing because every surface is different. I've changed my stance several times now, and I feel I can adapt anywhere at the moment.”
Reflecting on his impressive 118-run partnership with Rohit Sharma against a formidable Australian attack, Iyer acknowledged the challenging batting conditions and the importance of rotating strike to build pressure on the bowlers.
Iyer also lauded Australia's strong batting performance, especially that of youngster Cooper Connolly, who demonstrated maturity in finishing the game.
Addressing the balance between domestic and international cricket, Iyer said, “It's about adapting to the conditions and being match-prepared. Domestic cricket gives you that confidence, and recently, the India A series also gave me a good boost before coming here.”
Despite the defeat, Iyer praised the Australian bowlers and highlighted his progress since the Nagpur ODI against England. He emphasized the importance of maintaining confidence and focusing on performance, regardless of the circumstances.
