World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and his wife, Ella Victoria, have welcomed their first child, marking a touching new chapter in their lives. Ella announced on social media that the baby was born on Saturday, September 27.
In a heartwarming post, she shared a photo of Magnus and their newborn sleeping side by side — a tender snapshot that quickly resonated within the chess community. FIDE also joined in extending congratulations, amplifying the joy around their announcement.
The couple had revealed Ella’s pregnancy in May 2025, when Carlsen posted pictures of his wife cradling her baby bump with the caption, “My beautiful pregnant wife.” They were married earlier this year in January, in a private ceremony at Oslo’s Holmenkollen Chapel. At the time, Ella told followers they would “find out in a few months” when asked about the baby’s gender.
Even as Carlsen celebrates this joyous milestone, he is preparing for a high-profile return to the board. The Saint Louis Chess Club, reopening after major upgrades, will host the Clutch Chess: The Legends/Champions Showdown series from October 27 to 29.
A highlight of the event will be Carlsen’s much-anticipated clash with reigning World champion D. Gukesh in the Champions Showdown segment. Meanwhile, legends Garry Kasparov and Viswanathan Anand will renew their storied rivalry in another marquee match.
The Carlsen–Gukesh duel is generating enormous excitement, pairing one of the greatest players of the modern era with one of today’s brightest young stars. In 2025, Indian chess prodigy Gukesh stunned the chess world by defeating Carlsen twice.
His first win came at Norway Chess 2025, where he beat Carlsen in classical format after the World No.1 blundered under time pressure. Later, at the SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz Croatia 2025, Gukesh struck again, outplaying Carlsen in a rapid game.
The back-to-back triumphs underline Gukesh’s rise as one of the most formidable young stars in global chess.
