The recent ILT20 auction left many fans and cricket experts stunned as legendary Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin went unsold.
The Test stalwart entered the auction in the first round with a base price of USD 120,000, but no franchise bid for him—a development that shocked many, considering his vast experience and proven all-round abilities with both bat and ball. Ashwin’s record in domestic T20 leagues, coupled with his leadership qualities, has historically made him a valuable asset for any team. Yet, despite his credentials, he found himself overlooked in the high-profile UAE-based tournament.
While fans speculated on possible reasons, former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull offered some insight during the live auction broadcast on YouTube. Doull suggested that Ashwin may have voluntarily pulled out of the auction after being ignored in the first round. While this has not been officially verified, Doull noted that if true, the decision would be surprising.
“We're hearing that he may have pulled out of the auction, which is a massive surprise. I mean, you've got to read the room,” Doull commented.
Doull argued that such a move could be seen as short-sighted, considering that franchises may have had an interest in signing him in later rounds.
“You've got to understand what's going on out there and all that money left, when there are 3-4 teams with over $400,000 left in their pot. I don't think they came here not wanting to spend money—it’s there to be spent. If he pulled himself out, then he just hasn't read the room. I think sides would have gone in for him,” he said.
Another possible explanation lies in scheduling. The ILT20, which runs from December 2 to January 4, overlaps with Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), which starts on December 14 and continues until January 25. Ashwin is confirmed to have signed with the Sydney Thunder for the upcoming season.
Given the overlap, it is plausible that Ashwin opted out of the ILT20 to avoid overcommitment and the physical strain of travelling between the UAE and Australia for back-to-back tournaments. Considering his age and the workload he manages as a senior Indian cricketer, prioritising the BBL could be a strategic choice to maintain form and fitness..
In the end, Ashwin remains a world-class spinner and as an experienced all-rounder is not doubted. His absence from the ILT20 auction may have raised eyebrows, but his presence in the BBL ensures that cricket fans will continue to witness his craft on the field.
